Feeding

Satin Balls

As my sweet pup got older her eating habits changed and I had to try different foods to keep weight on her. Thankfully I learned about Satin Balls from other volunteers at the shelter where I walked dogs. They use these at the shelter to entice stressed or underweight dogs to eat. Thankfully it worked like a charm on my pup too. Being that she only weighed 3 pounds, I needed to cut the original recipe down to 1/10th! So to save you the math, here’s the recipe I followed, adapted from the one found here.

1 lb ground beef (the cheapest kind with at least 20% fat)
1 cup Total cereal
1.5 cups instant oatmeal
1/2 cup Wheat germ
2 Tbsp Olive oil or vegetable oil
2 Tbsp unsulphured molasses
1 egg (raw including crushed shell!)
1 packet unflavored Gelatin (1/4 oz)

I rolled these into single portion balls and froze them. I’d thaw them and break them up into pieces. You can make patties, balls, or bite size pieces. These are served raw, but if my girl was feeling picky sometimes I’d cook them.
